Does a maternal history of abuse before pregnancy affect pregnancy outcomes? A systematic review with meta-analysis
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Oct 21, 2018
Nesari M, et al. - Researchers investigated if a maternal history of abuse before pregnancy is linked with preterm delivery risk and low birth weight via conducting a systematic review with meta-analysis. On analyzing original studies on this topic, they noted a significant association of maternal history of abuse before pregnancy with preterm delivery and low birth weight. Subgroup analysis based on the time of abuse before pregnancy showed an increase in the risk of low birth weight by 57% in correlation to childhood abuse. Practitioners are recommended to carefully examine the maternal history of abuse prior to pregnancy during antenatal visits in order to assess the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. More high-quality research studies on this topic are recommended to strengthen the inference.
