Documenting and visualising progress towards Universal Health Coverage of insulin and blood glucose test strips for people with diabetes
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Sep 28, 2019
Klatman EL, et al. - A questionnaire was given to chief informants in 37 less-resourced countries in order to record and visualize progress towards Universal Health Coverage of insulin and blood glucose test strips for individuals with diabetes to create scales on three dimensions ie, the covered population, services that were given and direct costs. Data reported that insulin was provided by 65% of the less-resourced national health systems, with medians of 67% for service provision (equating to Human Regular and NPH), 55% direct costs covered, and 75% availability. Only 14% of the less-resourced systems provided test strips, with medians 42%, 76%, and 88% respectively. According to findings, no less-resourced country even had near-complete insulin coverage, and the coverage for test strips was worse. This research shows the usefulness of this framework that could be developed to track progress in meeting the needs of people with diabetes.
