Do depressive symptoms affect balance in older adults with mild cognitive impairment? Results from the “gait and brain study”

Experimental Gerontology Apr 23, 2018

Pieruccini-Faria F, et al. - Authors examined if the presence of significant depressive symptoms affects postural sway under somatosensory challenges in a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) population. MCI and depression were noted to have independent association with falls. During sensorimotor challenges, depressive symptoms may amplify balance problems in MCI. Depressive symptoms impair balance independently of cognitive function in MCI populations. Affective dysfunction in MCI may enhance the risk of falls.
