Distribution of ischemic strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation: The FibStroke Study
Neurology® Clinical Practice Jul 22, 2019
Jaakkola J, et al. - In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) suffering an ischemic stroke, researchers determined the relative frequency of affected cerebrovascular territories. The study sample consisted of 1,976 subjects who experienced their first-ever ischemic stroke during 2003–2012 and were diagnosed with AF before or within 30 days after the event. Strokes were radiographically classified to be located either in the anterior or posterior cerebrovascular territory and the impact of the use of CHA2DS2-VASc, oral anticoagulant (OAC) and timing of AF diagnosis on lesion localization was determined. According to this retrospective multicenter cohort study, timing of AF diagnosis, use of OAC drugs, or score of CHA2DS2-VASc did not influence ischemic stroke distribution. In the left hemisphere, anterior territory strokes were slightly more frequently located.
