Disparities in the management of newly diagnosed paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia for women vs men in the United States
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 18, 2020
Sacks NC, Everson K, Emden MR, et al. - Researchers used the IBM MarketScan Commercial Research Databases to determine if and to what extent there exist disparities in diagnosis, treatment, healthcare resource use, and expenditures between women and men with newly diagnosed paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). Participants aged 18 to 40 years. A tendency to have higher rates of anxiety and chronic pulmonary disease was noted in women with PSVT vs men. Among female patients, fewer were managed with cardiac ablation and more received medical therapy, including β blockers or calcium channel blockers. In this study population diagnosed with PSVT and aged 18 to 40 years, approximately 2 of 3 patients were women. Post-diagnosis, a significantly lower spending was reported among women, indicating lower ablation rates as well as less spending on services with a PSVT diagnosis.
