Different influence of blood pressure on new-onset atrial fibrillation in pre- and postmenopausal women
Hypertension Mar 22, 2021
Kim YG, Kim DY, Choi YY, et al. - Researchers utilized a nationwide population-based cohort in Korea to determine if the adverse effect of high blood pressure on new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) could be impacted by menopause. Participants were individuals who received both a national health check-up and national cancer screening program. Overall 3,280,834 females with 23,781,070 person*year follow-up data were evaluated. Menopause was evident in 1,439,161 females. In this study, increased blood pressure, specifically systolic blood pressure, was identified as a significant risk factor for new-onset AF among premenopausal women. A significantly attenuated link between blood pressure and new-onset AF risk was identified in postmenopausal women. Findings revealed a more profound effect of increased systolic blood pressure on new-onset AF in females not consuming medications for hypertension.
