Differences in linea alba stiffness and linea alba distortion between women with and without diastasis recti abdominis: The impact of measurement site and task

Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy Apr 02, 2019

Beamish N, et al. - In this cross-sectional, observational cohort, researchers studied the consequence of diastasis recti abdominis (DRA), measurement site and task on inter-rectus distance (IRD), linea alba (LA) stiffness and LA distortion estimated at rest, and during the head lift and semi-curl-up tasks and also to determine the associations among IRD, LA stiffness and LA distortion. They found a lower peak as well as mean LA stiffness and higher LA distortion among females with DRA. They found that IRD and LA distortion were not affected by the measurement site in DRA cases. They noticed decreased IRD, increased LA distortion but no change in LA stiffness during the head lift and semi-curl-up compared to rest. They observed the least stiff LA closest to the umbilicus in women without DRA. An increase in stiffness during the head lift and curl-up with no distortion or change in IRD in women without DRA was also reported.
