Dietary patterns and management of type 2 diabetes: A systematic review of randomised clinical trials
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Apr 06, 2019
Papamichou D, et al. - Researchers investigated the efficacy of ≥ 6 months of low-carbohydrate, macrobiotic, vegan, vegetarian, Mediterranean, and intermittent fasting (IF) diets vs low-fat diets on diabetes control and management via reviewing 20 randomized, controlled trials > 6 months that examined the effectiveness of various dietary patterns on type 2 diabetes mellitus. Outcomes suggested the potential efficacy of vegetarian and Mediterranean dietary patterns in improving glycemic control in people with diabetes. No conclusion, however, could be made regarding the long-term efficacy of low-carbohydrate diets on individuals with type 2 diabetes. Promising outcomes were evident with intermittent fasting and macrobiotic regimes in diabetes control; however, more conclusive research is needed.
