Diagnostic accuracy of oral mucosal transudate tests compared with blood-based rapid tests for HIV among children aged 18 months to 18 years in Kenya and Zimbabwe
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Nov 07, 2019
Chikwari D, Njuguna IN, Neary J, et al. - Given the persistence of gaps in HIV testing for children who were not tested in the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs, researchers examined the performance of oral mucosal transudate (OMT) rapid HIV tests in children; OMT rapid HIV tests are highly sensitive in adults. From Kenya and Zimbabwe, they tested a total of 1,776 children (median age: 7.3 years) who were antiretroviral therapy-naive for HIV using rapid OraQuick ADVANCE Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody test on oral fluids (OMT) and blood-based rapid diagnostic testing. Compared with national algorithms, no HIV-positive children were missed using OMT. Data thereby support the validity of OMTs in this age range.
