Diabetes mellitus is associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke in patients with and without coronary artery disease
Stroke Dec 10, 2019
Olesen KKW, Madsen M, Gyldenkerne C, et al. - Researchers determined if patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) without coronary artery disease (CAD) are at risk for ischemic stroke in comparison to patients with neither DM nor CAD. The sample consisted of patients who had coronary angiography between 2004 and 2012 in Western Denmark. Individuals with previous ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack were excluded. Patients were stratified according to the presence of DM and CAD. In total, 81,909 patients were included. According to findings, the risk of ischemic stroke after coronary angiography is not only associated with CAD, but also with DM. Depending on the extent of CAD, their combination may further increase the risk of ischemic stroke.
