Diabetes mellitus increases risk of gastric cancer after Helicobacter pylori eradication: A territory-wide study with propensity score analysis
Diabetes Care Jul 19, 2019
Cheung KS, et al. - In this territory-wide cohort study, researchers ascertained if type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) increased risk of gastric cancer (GC) in patients after they received treatment for Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection. The study sample consisted of subjects (aged ≥45 years) in Hong Kong who had taken clarithromycin-based triple therapy for HP infection between 2003 and 2012. From a public electronic health database, data were retrieved. At a median age of 72.4 years old, 153 out of 46,460 patients developed GC during a median follow-up of 7.1 years. The authors concluded that type 2 DM is correlated with a greater risk of GC among patients who went through HP eradication, especially patients with gastric cardia cancer and patients with less than optimal control of DM.
