Diabetes as a risk factor for herpes zoster in adults: A synthetic literature review
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Dec 19, 2019
Saadatian-Elahi M, et al. - By using appropriate keywords, papers in English or French published between January 2000 and December 2018 were selected from PubMed and Google Scholarship to assess the role of diabetes as a risk factor for herpes zoster (HZ) and to examine implications of prevention by vaccination with available HZ vaccines. Studies that examined the incidence rates of HZ in individuals with diabetes were reviewed. According to findings, HZ risk was significantly higher in individuals with diabetes as compared with controls in 11 studies out of 16, although the magnitude of risk related to diabetes differed across studies from 1.06 to 2.38. HZ incidence in diabetes patients increased with age and in women was higher than in men. In patients with diabetes, the incidence of the most common complication of HZ, ie, post-herpetic neuralgia was also higher. The presence of HZ in diabetes patients adds additional complications to the preexisting comorbidity. Therefore, investigating the effects of HZ vaccination preventive measure is of paramount importance in diabetes patients.
