Development and validation of a predictive model for incident type 2 diabetes in middle-aged Mexican adults: The metabolic syndrome cohort

BMC Endocrine Disorders May 02, 2019

Arellano-Campos O, et al. - Because type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Mexico, researchers reported type 2 diabetes incidence rates (IR) in apparently healthy middle-aged Mexican adults, identified incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (ID)-related risk factors, and developed a predictive ID model in a high-risk population. A total of 6,144 participants were included in the final analysis. According to findings, ID is currently at an alarming rate in seemingly healthy middle-aged Mexican adults. Family history of diabetes, age, abdominal obesity, waist-height ratio, impaired fasting glucose, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance 2, and metabolic syndrome were identified as risk factors for ID. The constructed models may be implemented to predict the risk of diabetes and represent the greatest prospective effort in the Latin American population to study metabolic diseases. Fasting plasma glucose was found to be the strongest predictor of incident diabetes, especially in overweight or obese individuals.
