Desmopressin and the risk of hyponatremia: A population-based cohort study
PLoS Medicine Oct 28, 2019
Fralick M, et al. - The rate of hyponatremia in routine clinical care among patients prescribed the older formulation of desmopressin was investigated. In this population-based new-user cohort study conducted from February 1, 2006, to February 1, 2017, researchers matched 3,137 adults who were newly prescribed desmopressin and matched them to 3,137 adults who were newly prescribed oxybutynin using a nationwide commercial health plan database. Outcomes revealed a marked increased rate of subsequent hyponatremia in correlation to the use of an older formulation of desmopressin vs other medications indicated for lower urinary tract symptoms. They recommend communicating such risks to patients prescribed this formulation of desmopressin.
