Descriptions of diabetes burnout from individuals with type 1 diabetes: An analysis of YouTube videos
Diabetic Medicine Jul 12, 2019
Abdoli S, et al. - Researchers conducted this qualitative descriptive study to investigate the self-descriptions of diabetes burnout among people with type 1 diabetes through YouTube videos. A systematic approach was used to search YouTube videos with titles, descriptions, or content specifically related to diabetes burnout from 2007 to 2017. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, all videos meeting inclusion criteria (n=32) were transcribed verbatim and analyzed. The four major themes related to diabetes burnout were feeling mentally drained and physically tired of dealing with self-care; experiencing a detachment from self, diabetes care, and support system; being powerless and paralyzed to “climb out” of diabetes burnout; and contributing potential factors to diabetes burnout. Diabetes burnout self-descriptions suggested that it is a combination of emotions and behaviors on a spectrum from exhaustion to detachment with an overwhelming sense of powerlessness.
