Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty using a pull-through technique with novel infusion forceps

Cornea Feb 23, 2021

Jabbour S, Jun AS, Shekhawat NS, et al. - In this retrospective case series, researchers described a surgical technique of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) utilizing an endothelium-in pull-through technique with novel infusion forceps and reported 6-month clinical outcomes. They analyzed 33 cases with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy who had either DMEK alone (n = 5), DMEK combined with phacoemulsification (n = 27), or DMEK combined with intraocular lens exchange (n = 1) performed by surgeons at the beginning of the DMEK learning curve. Data reported that 82% of eyes obtained a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/25 or better. At 6 months, there were no primary or secondary graft failures. In eyes with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, DMEK with infusion microforceps is effective and safe and may provide a more controlled surgery, making it ideal for both inexperienced and experienced DMEK surgeons.
