Depressive symptoms and problematic alcohol and other substance use in 1476 gay, bisexual, and other MSM at three research sites in Kenya
AIDS Jul 04, 2018
Korhonen C, et al. - Researchers sought for the factors associated with depressive symptoms and problematic alcohol and other substance use among gay, bisexual, and other MSM (GBMSM) in Kenya. Information regarding depressive symptoms [Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9)], alcohol use [Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT)] and other substance use [Drug Abuse Screening Test 6 (DAST-6)] was derived from self-identified GBMSM (1476 participants) in three HIV research studies in Kenya. They identified 452 (31%) with moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms, 637 (44%) hazardous alcohol use, and 749 (51%) problematic substance use. In rights-constrained settings, culturally appropriate services seemed required for treatment and prevention of mental health and substance use disorders, in addition to human rights advocacy to prevent abuse. They recommend including mental health and substance use screening and treatment or referral as an integral part of programs, aimed at HIV prevention and treatment in GBMSM.
