Delay in treatment seeking and associated factors among suspected pulmonary tuberculosis patients in public health facilities of Adama town, eastern Ethiopia
BMC Public Health Nov 22, 2019
Wondawek TM, et al. - Researchers performed this cross-sectional study in pulmonary tuberculosis suspected patients in health facilities located in Adama, Ethiopia, to assess the extent of delays in treatment-seeking as well as risk factors in these individuals (n = 598). By means of a structured questionnaire, they gathered data from all study participants on the same day of tuberculosis diagnosis. The link between delay in seeking-treatment and many factors was determined using a bivariate and multivariable regression model. Of 598 included patients, smear-positive were 79 (13.2%) in total. Delay in treatment-seeking was reported in 61(77.2%) of overall smear-positive participants, and 275 (46%) patients delayed seeking treatment for > 30 days. Among participants, almost half delayed seeking treatment in this study area. The factors that contributed to delay in treatment-seeking in this patient population were female gender, low income, family size of five and greater, no knowledge about tuberculosis and cure rate.
