Database analysis of the risk factors of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in Hungarian patients
BMJ Open May 30, 2019
Kotán EV, et al. - Using the data of the national service of Hungary, researchers conducted a retrospective observational epidemiological registry-based study to identify the incidence of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) and to analyze the incidence and risk factors in the Hungarian population. The Hungarian BP population in the study time was 236,207 patients, using the method developed for this study. Investigators found that the incidence of BRONJ in Hungary in the malignant indication of BPs is 0.9% and 0.1% in the non-malignant indication. Although BRONJ developed in more women, the proportion of men was substantially higher than women. Steroids increase the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw; differences between BP drugs have also been found. In the Hungarian population, oncology indicated, intravenously administered and steroid-comedicated BP therapies increase risk of developing BRONJ.
