Dairy product intake and risk of type 2 diabetes in EPIC-InterAct: A Mendelian randomization study
Diabetes Care Feb 12, 2019
Vissers LET, et al. - In this EPIC-InterAct case-cohort study, researchers evaluated the causal relationship between dairy product consumption and type 2 diabetes incidence. The study sample consisted of 21,820 European individuals (9,686 diabetes patients). Participants were genotyped and rs4988235 (LCT-12910C>T), an SNP for lactase persistence (LP) that allows digestion of lactose, was imputed. According to findings, rs4988235 was linked to milk but not with consumption of other dairy products. Overall, results of this Mendelian randomization study did not support an association of milk intake with diabetes, which corresponds to previous observational and genetic associations. The researchers found that LP may also be associated with the intake of other foods, but they consider it unlikely that this caused the observed null result due to the modest associations.
