Cytomegalovirus shedding in seropositive pregnant women from a high-seroprevalence population: The Brazilian Cytomegalovirus Hearing and Maternal Secondary Infection Study
Clinical Infectious Diseases Aug 21, 2018
Barbosa NG, et al. - Correlating factors of cytomegalovirus (CMV) shedding found in a cohort of seropositive pregnant women were investigated. Researchers performed a prospective study including 120 CMV-seropositive women. They collected saliva, urine, vaginal swabs, and blood in the first, second, and third trimesters and 1 month postpartum. Outcomes revealed relatively frequent CMV shedding in seropositive pregnant women. Virus shedding was noted to be correlated with caring for young children as well as with crowded living conditions, and these may provide occasions for increased exposure that could lead to CMV reinfections in seropositive women.
