Cytokine profiles of phakic and pseudophakic eyes with primary retinal detachment
Acta Ophthalmologica May 04, 2019
Garweg JG, et al. - Via obtaining aqueous humour (AH) and vitreous fluid (VF) from patients with primary retinal detachment (RD) without proliferative vitreoretinopathy undergoing vitrectomy, researchers compared the cytokine profiles of phakic (p) and pseudophakic (ps) eyes with primary rhegmatogenous RD to eyes with macular holes (MH) and identified differences in the specific cytokine profiles. VF and AH samples were included with 71 RD eyes (pRD N = 38; psRD N = 33) and 26 MH eyes. According to findings, initiating immunological and profibrotic processes after RD appears to be a complex but non-specific cytokine environmental response. Relevant differences in eye cytokine profiles with pRD and psRD have not been identified, whereas cytokine differences in RD between AH and VF could be explained by an upregulation in the vitreous, a higher turn in the anterior chamber, or differences in inflammatory cascades in both compartments.
