Current demographic status of cardiologists in the United States
JAMA Sep 18, 2019
Mehta LS, Fisher K, Rzeszut AK, et al. - Researchers examined the cardiology physician workforce for its current gender and race/and ethnicity demographics. In addition, they examined how these have changed in recent years. For this cross-sectional study, data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Medical Association, and the American Board of Internal Medicine was used. The analysis suggests a slight increase in the proportion of adult female cardiologists from 2006 through 2016 but the proportion is still low. They observed that female pediatric cardiologists increase in a greater proportion, however, they still lagged relative to the US population. Members of underrepresented minorities showed a modest increase, but their representation remained low in adult and pediatric cardiology. These observations suggest no diversity in the cardiology physician workforce; the slow pace of diversification suggests the necessity for focused efforts to address diversity among trainees for improvement.
