Creation and validation of a novel sex‐specific mortality risk score in LVAD recipients
Journal of the American Heart Association Apr 02, 2021
Nayak A, Hu Y, Steinberg R, et al. - Researchers sought to develop as well as validate a gender‐specific risk score for early mortality in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients, by using the IMACS (International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support) registry. Participants were adult patients with a continuous‐flow LVAD. Experts constructed the IMACS Risk Score in the derivation cohort to predict 3‐month mortality, from preoperative candidate predictors chosen employing the Akaike information criterion, or significant gender × variable interaction. Higher odds of 3‐month mortality were noted, in males as well as in females, for each quartile increment in IMACS risk score. Overall, it was concluded that excellent risk prediction in LVAD recipients is offered by a gender‐specific risk score.
