CORT-AHF Study: Effect on outcomes of systemic corticosteroid therapy during early management acute heart failure
JACC: Heart Failure Oct 08, 2019
Miró O, Takagi K, Gayat E, et al. - Researchers investigated the potential impact of systemic corticosteroids (new onset) administered to patients with acute heart failure (AHF) on outcomes, with differentiated analyses for patients with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as a comorbidity. Using the Epidemiology of Acute Heart Failure in the Emergency Departments registry, they identified patients with AHF and obtained data regarding new-onset corticosteroid therapy and COPD condition. Separate analyses for patients with and without COPD were performed. Overall, 11,356 patients were included; of those, 8,635 did not have COPD (841 corticosteroid-treated, 9.7%) and 2,721 had COPD (753 corticosteroid-treated, 27.7%). They found that during an episode of AHF, the new onset of systemic corticosteroid therapy did not cause any harm in patients with or without concomitant COPD.
