Correlation and predictability of ocular aberrations and the visual outcome after quadrifocal intraocular lens implantation: A retrospective longitudinal study

BMC Ophthalmology Aug 27, 2019

Lee CY, et al. - Researchers carried out a retrospective longitudinal study to assess the correlating and predicting factors of visual outcome after implantation of newly developed diffractive quadrifocal intraocular lens (IOL). Patients who had diffractive quadrifocal IOL implantation with a follow-up period longer than 6 months and wavefront aberrometer records within one week were enrolled perioperatively. Therefore, from 73 patients, a total of 73 eyes were involved. According to findings, the preoperative and postoperative tracey refraction spherical equivalent, angle alpha and spherical aberration were negatively linked to the postoperative visual acuity, whereas a smaller angle alpha could positively anticipate better far and near visual outcomes in patients with diffractive quadrifocal IOL implantation. A large angle alpha may also be associated with decentration of IOL, worse visual acuity after surgery, more visual disturbance, and poor patient satisfaction. In addition, in some aspects, the majority of ocular aberrations were also correlated with postoperative vision. For verifying the distinct contraindications of different types of multifocal IOL based on the value of ocular aberrations, further large-scale studies are required.
