Coronary artery calcification and mortality risk in patients with severe mental illness: A retrospective multicenter cohort study

Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging Mar 18, 2019

Kugathasan P, et al. - Researchers assessed coronary artery calcification (CAC) severity and its influence on mortality rates in patients with severe mental illness (SMI) vs the general population. From the Western Denmark Heart Registry, all individuals with a registered cardiac computed tomography for calcium scoring were identified. Overall 48,757 individuals were included, and of these 564 patients had SMI (1.2%), while the remaining individuals were used for comparison. Increased cardiovascular risks were observed in patients with SMI, but CAC score in these patients did not differ from the comparison group. Patients with SMI had increased mortality rates, independent of CAC severity; however, a comparatively large number of noncardiovascular causes of mortality identified in this sample could be suggestive of factors other than coronary artery disease contributing to death.
