Consumption of fruits and vegetables among individuals 15 years and older in 28 low- and middle-income countries
The Journal of Nutrition Jul 04, 2019
Frank SM, et al. - Using data from 193,606 individuals aged ≥ 15 years in 28 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), researchers evaluated the proportion of subjects meeting the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation of 400 g/d of fruits and vegetables (equal to ∼5 servings/d) for the prevention of noncommunicable diseases. They also assessed sociodemographic factors that predict meeting the WHO recommendation. Compared with the amount recommended by the WHO, the amounts of fruits and vegetables consumed by > 80% of individuals aged ≥ 15 years residing in these 28 LMICs were lower. For fruits and for vegetables, the mean intakes were 1.15 (1.10–1.20) servings/d and 2.46 (2.40–2.51) servings/d, respectively. With increasing country gross domestic product class and with reducing country FAO food price index, an increase in the proportion of individuals meeting the recommendation was observed. The likelihood of achieving the recommendation was more in individuals with secondary education or greater vs those with no formal education.
