Complications, reoperations, readmissions, and length of hospital stay in 34,639 surgical cases of lumbar disc herniation
The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 04, 2019
Fjeld OR, et al. - In this longitudinal observational study, researchers examined the rates of surgical complications, reoperations, and readmissions following herniated lumbar disc surgery. In addition, they assessed how sociodemographic factors and comorbidity influence the rate of such unfavourable events. They analyzed 34,639 operations. Among these, surgical complication was observed in 2.7%, repeat surgery within 90 days was undertaken in 2.1%, a non-surgical readmission within 90 days was noted for 2.4% (95% CI 2.2 to 2.5), and at least one of these unfavourable events were evident in 6.7%. Advanced age and comorbidity were correlated with unfavourable events. Sociodemographic patient characteristics and unfavourable events were noted to have limited associations.
