Complications of hemodialysis catheter bloodstream infections: Impact of infecting organism
American Journal of Nephrology Aug 01, 2019
Farrington CA, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers investigated the impact of infecting organism type on the clinical presentation or complications of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI). They used a prospective vascular access database from a large academic dialysis center. CRBSI was suspected in a total of 339 patients, of these, 50 (15%) had an alternate source of infection. Among catheter-dependent hemodialysis patients with suspected CRBSI, 85% had CRBSI confirmed. Presentation with atypical symptoms was reported for S. epidermidis CRBSI. The likelihood of needing hospitalization or intensive care admission was more in S. aureus CRBSI. Metastatic infection was relatively uncommon, and rarely, CRBSI caused death.
