Complications associated with plate fixation of acute midshaft clavicle fractures vs non-unions
European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology Jul 21, 2018
Sawalha S, et al. - Authors compared the complications and re-operations after open reduction and plate fixation for acute midshaft clavicle fractures vs non-unions. After non-union surgery, the complication and re-operation rates were not higher vs acute fracture fixation. These mostly demonstrated a relationship with persistent delayed or non-union, rather than operative complications. A ‘higher complication rate after surgery for non-union, should it happen’ should not be an argument against non-operative treatment, when counselling patients about the treatment of midshaft clavicle fractures.
