Comparisons of bone density and body composition among adolescents with anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa
International Journal of Eating Disorders Feb 21, 2019
Nagata JM, et al. - Researchers retrospectively reviewed and analyzed electronic medical records of patients 9–20 years with anorexia nervosa (AN) or atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) who underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans to compare bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition among adolescents: (a) with AAN vs AN and (b) those with and without a prior history of overweight. Analyzing a total of 286 adolescents with AN or AAN, they noted higher BMD Z-scores in adolescents with AAN compared to adolescents with AN. In addition, greater BMD Z-scores were noted among adolescents with a prior overweight history vs those without a prior overweight history.
