Comparison of vitreomacular interface changes in myopic foveoschisis and idiopathic epiretinal membrane foveoschisis
American Journal of Ophthalmology May 03, 2020
Vogt D, Stefanov S, Guenther SR, et al. - In this clinicopathological study, researchers sought to compare features of the vitreomacular interface (VMI) in myopic foveoschisis (mFS) and idiopathic epiretinal membrane foveoschisis (iERM-FS), and to correlate with optical coherence tomography and clinical data. From eyes with mFS (5 eyes) and iERM-FS (5 eyes), epiretinal membrane and internal limiting membrane (ILM) specimens were removed. Whereas premacular tissue fibrocellular components in mFS are identical to iERM-FS, ILM pathological anomalies were present exclusively in high myopia. Although peeling of the ILM seems important for the complete removal of tractional components of the VMI, histopathological findings highlight the risk of retinal damage in these highly myopic eyes, suggesting that individual preoperative evaluation and modification of surgical techniques require further research.
