Comparison of usefulness of cardiac resynchronization therapy in patients with type 1 myotonic dystrophy with —vs— without left bundle branch block
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 17, 2019
Nikhanj A, Sivakumaran S, Yogasundaram H, et al. - In a cohort of 64 patients with type 1 myotonic dystrophy, researchers compared the utility of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) between those with left bundle branch block (LBBB) vs those without LBBB in this prospective study. LBBB was present in 12 (19%) patients and was related to decreased left ventricular systolic function. CRT devices were received by 8 of these patients. A decrease in median QRS complex duration from 173 ms to 166 ms and improvement in median left ventricular ejection fraction from 37% to 46% was observed as a result of receiving CRT. Findings revealed the feasibility as well as the efficacy of CRT device therapy as an option that improves left ventricular function in this vulnerable group of patients with advanced cardiac disease.
