Comparison of trends, mortality, and readmissions after insertion of left ventricular assist devices in patients <65 years vs ≥65 years
The American Journal of Cardiology Jul 16, 2020
Rali AS, Ranka S, Acharya P, et al. - Researchers used the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2007 to 2015 as well as the Nationwide Readmission Database from 2014 to third quarter of 2015, to analyze utilization trends, results, and rates as well as predictors of readmissions in patients receiving left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) with age ≥ 65 years (AO) vs patient age < 65 years. In AO patients, a rise in implants was reported from 20% (154) of the total LVADs implanted in 2007 to 33.2% (1,215) in 2014 and 31.8% (910) through September 2015. Overall, receipt of increasing number of LVADs was reported among patients age ≥ 65 years with multiple co-morbidities, along with improved survival outcomes. Relative to younger patients, these patients had comparable 30-day readmissions.
