Comparison of the effect of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation on all-cause hospitalization in patients with vs without heart failure (from the Nationwide Readmission Database)
The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 19, 2019
Elkaryoni A, et al. - Given a common occurrence of heart failure (HF) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) as well as its link with a high hospitalization burden, researchers focused on the real-world link between catheter ablation (CA) and rates of subsequent hospitalization in patients with AF and HF. They used the Nationwide Readmission Database to select patients who had CA for AF during the middle 4 months of each year 2010-2015. Inclusion criteria were satisfied by 10,966 patients, including 1,950 with HF. They noted a shift in all-cause hospitalization rates from 45.8% prior to CA to 33.2% after in the HF group. For non-HF patients, 23.8% and 19.7% were estimated as the corresponding rates. Findings revealed a significant decrease in all-cause hospitalization rates after CA for AF. A greater reduction in admissions was observed in HF patients, irrespective of ejection fraction.
