Comparison of outcomes using the first and second generation cryoballoon to treat atrial fibrillation
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Apr 15, 2019
Davies A, et al. - Researchers compared outcomes, including freedom from symptomatic recurrence and major complications, with the first and second generation cryoballoon (with the second generation balloon incorporating the Achieve Lasso catheter) among symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) patients who had failed at least one antiarrhythmic drug. In the first generation cohort vs in the second-generation cohort, freedom from symptomatic AF after a single procedure, as observed at 12 months, was 64.3% vs 78.6%, respectively, and at 24 months it was 51.3% vs 72.6%, respectively. With second-generation cryoballoon, improved freedom from symptomatic AF as well as reduction in procedure and fluoroscopy time were observed. Furthermore, it was associated with a similar low rate of major complications.
