Comparison of outcomes of transcatheter mitral valve repair (MitraClip) in patients < 80 years vs ≥ 80 years
The American Journal of Cardiology Jul 30, 2020
Nazir S, Ahuja KR, Ul Hassan Virk H, et al. - Using the National Readmission Database from January 2014 to December 2016, researchers investigated the results of transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) among highly aged patients (≥ 80 years). Similar rates of in-hospital death, ischemic stroke, cardiac tamponade, cardiogenic shock, and acute myocardial infarction, but higher rates of discharge to skilled nursing facility, all-cause 30-day readmissions, and heart failure-related 30-day readmissions were reported in highly aged patients vs those less than 80 years, in the Propensity-score matched cohort (age ≥ 80, n = 2,185; age < 80, n = 2,197). Overall, findings demonstrated the safety of TMVR therapy as well as its link with low rates of in-hospital adverse events but higher rate of 30-day readmissions in highly aged patients vs those less than 80 years. To further improve results, evidence-based interventions confirmed to be effective in attenuating the burden of heart failure readmissions should be employed in these patients.
