Comparison of outcomes and cost of endovascular management vs surgical bypass for the management of lower extremities peripheral arterial disease
The American Journal of Cardiology Aug 24, 2018
Doshi R, et al. - Using the National Inpatient Sample from 2012 to 2014, researchers assessed in-hospital outcomes in hospitalizations including endovascular or bypass surgery for lower extremities peripheral arterial disease (LE-PAD). Comparison of in-hospital outcomes was carried out in a propensity score matched analysis. Higher baseline comorbidities and older age were reported for hospitalizations including endovascular management. They found that, endovascular intervention procedures vs surgical bypass resulted in significantly lower in-hospital mortality (1.5% vs 2.5%). Furthermore, they noted that, except stroke and post-procedural infection, endovascular management yielded lower secondary outcomes. Overall, they concluded that, endovascular management vs bypass surgery was related to lower in-hospital morbidity, mortality, length of stay, and cost.
