Comparison of outcomes among patients with cardiogenic shock admitted on weekends vs weekdays
The American Journal of Cardiology Jan 08, 2021
Harhash AA, Kennedy KF, Fendler TJ, et al. - Researchers used the National Inpatient Sample to determine the impact of weekend admissions on results in patients admitted with cardiogenic shock (CS). They selected 875,054 CS admissions (age 67.4 ± 15.1 years, 40.2% female, 72.1% Caucasian), with 23% admissions on weekends. Between groups, similarity was evident in baseline comorbidities. Higher in-hospital mortality and cardiac arrest were consistently reported in relation to weekend admissions, during the study span. Overall, experts found higher in-hospital mortality as well as slightly less likelihood of receiving mechanical support and advanced therapies among patients with CS admitted on weekends vs those admitted on weekdays.
