Comparative analysis of short-term outcomes of patients with heart failure with a mid-range ejection fraction after acute decompensation
The American Journal of Cardiology Oct 01, 2018
Miro O, et al. - In this exploratory, secondary analysis of the Epidemiology of Acute Heart Failure in Emergency Departments Registry, which includes consecutive acute heart failure (AHF) patients diagnosed in 41 Spanish emergency departments (EDs), researchers compared short-term outcomes after an episode of AHF in patients with mid-range ejection fraction (40% to 49%; HFmrEF) vs patients with reduced (< 40%) and preserved (> 49%) ejection fractions (HFrEF and HFpEF, respectively). Patients' final destination after ED care was also taken into account while performing assessments. Compared with those in the classical HFrEF and HFpEF categories, similar short-term outcomes were observed among patients in the newly created HFmrEF category suffering from an acute decompensation. Nonetheless, better outcomes were noted among HFmrEF patients handled in cardiology wards during decompensation.
