Comparative analysis of circulating noncoding RNAs vs protein biomarkers in the detection of myocardial injury

Circulation Research Jul 30, 2019

Schulte C, et al. - Researchers compared different classes of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) with cardiac protein biomarkers for myocardial injury. They screened 158 circular RNAs (circRNAs) and 21 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in human cardiac tissue; they recognized 12 circRNAs and 11 lncRNAs as possible biomarkers with cardiac origin. Inclusion of 11 microRNAs (miRNAs) was done. Comparative assessment of ncRNAs and protein biomarkers indicated cardiac myosin-binding protein C (cMyBP-C) as the most sensitive cardiac biomarker; miRNAs were seen as promising candidates to integrate ncRNAs with protein biomarkers. Compared to cardiac proteins, current miRNA detection had inferior sensitivity, but a new path of integrating complementary traits of different biomarker types may open with a multibiomarker combination of muscle-enriched miRNAs with cMyBP-C and cardiac troponins.
