Comorbidity burden and adverse outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Journal of the American Heart Association May 12, 2021
Feldman DR, Romashko MD, Koethe B, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective single‐center study to determine the prevalence of comorbid conditions as well as links with outcomes post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). They examined the link between 21 chronic conditions and short‐ and medium‐term results among 341 patients who had TAVR and were observed for 1 year. At the time of TAVR, presence of ≥4 chronic conditions was detected in 220 (65%) patients. In high‐risk patients managed with TAVR, worse clinical outcomes were observed in relation to comorbid disease burden. Standard risk assessment failed to adequately capture the risks related to comorbid disease burden. Risk stratification efforts may be improved by a systematic evaluation of comorbid conditions.
