Comorbidities associated with HPV infection among people living with HIV-1 in the southeastern US: A retrospective clinical cohort study
BMC Infectious Diseases Feb 20, 2020
Ye Y, Burkholder GA, Wiener HW, et al. - Given that in the US, the southeastern US is an epicenter for incident HIV with high prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) co-infections, researchers sought to ascertain the epidemiologies of HPV-linked with clinical conditions (CC) among people living with HIV-1 infection (PLWH). They assessed 4,484 PLWH in the study (3,429 men, 1,031 women, and 24 transgender); among these, there were 1,038 patients with HPV-related CC. The HPV-condition free group exhibited a higher median nadir CD4 count (cells/uL) than the case groups. HIV-infected men vs women were more frequently diagnosed with anogenital warts, anal low- and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL and HSIL), and cancer. Relative to black men, white men presented with anal LSIL and anal and penile cancers more frequently. White women vs black women were also more likely to be diagnosed with cervical HSIL and cancer. The analysis thus revealed significant differences between gender and race with the incidence of HPV-related CC among HIV patients.
