Comorbid hepatitis C does not modulate prevalence or severity of diabetic retinopathy
Clinical Ophthalmology Sep 11, 2019
Koenig LR, Rosenblatt R, Patel RM, et al. - Among patients with diabetes mellitus who either did or did not also have hepatitis C virus (HCV), researchers compared the prevalence and severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR)—a leading cause of blindness among working-age adults in the US. The study sample consisted of patients with diabetes mellitus, comparing 120 patients with comorbid HCV and 120 age-matched controls. According to findings, the prevalence or severity of DR among patients with DM was not modulated by comorbid HCV. These findings may inform the ophthalmic evaluation of clinical monitoring among HCV-positive diabetics, according to the investigators.
