Comorbid conditions and emergency department treat and release utilization in multimorbid persons with cognitive impairment
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jul 21, 2019
MacNeil-Vroomen JL, et al. - Researchers examined 1006 multimorbid persons with cognitive impairment to determine the comorbidities that confer increased risk for emergency department (ED) treat and release utilization. The association of 16 chronic conditions on the use of ED treat and release visit utilization was determined. At baseline, ≥6 conditions were evident in 28.5% and age ≥ 85 years was reported for 35.4%. Significantly enhanced adjusted risk ratios (aRR) of ED treat and release visits were observed for persons with depression representing 78/100 person-years, and osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis representing 71/100 person-years following adjustment for sex, age, race, education, urban-living, number of disabled activities of daily living, and sampling strata. At baseline, ≥1 informal caregiver was evident in 93.9% and a caregiver that helped with medications or attended physician visits was evident in 69.7%.
