Osorio M, Ravenell JE, Sevick MA, et al. - Researchers explored a community-based approach for diabetes screening in barbershops owned by black individuals, using point-of-care hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) testing. Compared with men in other racial and ethnic groups, black men with diabetes have disproportionately high rates of diabetic complications and are less likely to survive into their 70s in the United States. The investigation of diabetes is usually delayed, particularly among black men without a regular source of primary care. The community-based interventions have been successful in distinguishing and treating men with hypertension in barbershops, which are places of trust among black men.
