Cohort description: The Danish Blood Donor Staphylococcus aureus Carriage Study

Clinical Epidemiology Sep 26, 2019

Erikstrup LT, Dinh KM, Andersen PS, et al. - Given that an increased risk of S. aureus infection is conferred by Staphylococcus aureus carriage, researchers focused on S. aureus colonization among healthy people and intended to establish a prospective cohort and biobank for research in the health outcomes of colonization. In 2014, the Danish Blood Donor S. aureus Carriage Study was founded. Till now, 6,082 healthy participants with nasal swabs have been included, and repeated swabs are performed at subsequent donations. In order to determine the impact of using enrichment broth, a two-step method was used to culture samples obtained from the first 2,217 participants. The prevalence of S. aureus nasal colonization was estimated to be 41%. Men vs women had a higher prevalence of colonization, which was lower for smokers, and reduced with progressing age. The prevalence of S. aureus colonization following enrichment in participants swabbed from the nose and throat was found to be 55% with significantly higher prevalence in the throat (45%) vs nose (40%). Findings revealed a rise in the proportion of S. aureus colonization as a result of using an enrichment broth.
