Coexistence of malnutrition, frailty, physical frailty and disability in patients with COPD starting a pulmonary rehabilitation program
Clinical Nutrition Nov 23, 2019
ter Beek L, van der Vaart H, Wempe JB, et al. - In patients with COPD at the start of pulmonary rehabilitation, researchers ascertained if malnutrition, frailty, physical frailty, and disability coexist. COPD patients were evaluated at the start of a pulmonary rehabilitation program from March 2015 to May 2017. Of the 57 candidates (age 61.2±8.7 years), malnutrition and frailty coexisted in 40%. It was noted that malnutrition and physical frailty coexisted in 18% and malnutrition and disability in 21%. The results obtained from this cross-sectional study indicate that healthcare professionals should deliver nutritional interventions across multiple disciplines. While the prevalence of each of the four conditions is quite high, there is minimal coexistence of all four conditions (11%).
