Clinicopathological characteristics and recurrence risk of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma in the elderly
Cancer Management and Research Mar 29, 2019
Wang X, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers analyzed clinicopathological features as well as identified factors predictive of recurrence in the elderly papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) patients. This study included PTMC patients who underwent thyroidectomy. Patients with age ≥65 years were compared to those with age <65 years, with respect to clinicopathological characteristics. Compared with the patients with age P=0.002), bilaterality, extrathyroidal extension, and central compartment lymph node metastasis (CLNM), especially the ratio of CLNM >0.5, were more likely to be detected in patients in the elderly group. Overall, more aggressive biological features and higher recurrence rate were seen in the elderly PTMC patients. The factors that independently conferred risk for recurrence of the elderly patients with PTMC were tumor size >5 mm and CLNM ratio >0.5. In the presence of these factors, more aggressive treatment and rigorous follow-up could be considered.
